OpenAI–Tata Group Talks Mark Major Push for AI Infrastructure in India

OpenAI is exploring a landmark entry into the Indian market through a strategic partnership with the Tata Group, particularly Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). According to discussions reported, OpenAI aims to bring its large-scale AI infrastructure project, Stargate, into India through TCS’ HyperVault data-centre network. If finalised, the collaboration would position TCS as a key global partner in building and co-developing advanced agentic AI solutions.

Stargate valued at around $500 billion globally with a planned 100GW AI infrastructure footprint in the US is expected to expand to over ten countries, including the UK, Norway and UAE. India could emerge as one of the most significant hubs in this expansion, given its strong digital ecosystem and vast user base. India currently holds the second-largest number of ChatGPT users worldwide.

The India leg of the project is expected to start with a 500 MW lease for developing agentic AI capabilities. This move comes months after OpenAI’s earlier discussions with Reliance Industries failed to produce an agreement, prompting Reliance to strengthen alliances with Google and Meta for its own compute ambitions in Jamnagar.

If successful, OpenAI’s partnership with Tata would accelerate India’s position in the fast-growing enterprise AI market, projected to reach $17–22 billion by 2027.
